AFL Supports Same-Sex Marriage

The AFL has expressed support for same-sex couples being allowed to marry in a development advocates hope will help build momentum for marriage equality.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan revealed the league’s stance on the polarising issue in response to a letter from Geelong woman Sharyn Faulkner, who has a gay son.

Surf Coast Council Vote Supports Marriage Equality Despite Controvery

GAY marriage has sparked a fiery debate in the Surf Coast Shire council chambers but not for the reason you might expect.

Councillors unanimously supported marriage equality but were less agreeable on whether council had any role in endorsing the social justice campaign.

Councillor Eve Fisher put the motion forward that council write to all local, state and federal members of parliament, and the Victorian and Commonwealth equal opportunity and human rights commissions, to advise them of their support.

Media Release: Lottie’s “Letter Of Love” Makes Waves

Tasmanian school student, Lottie Frohmader, has made waves with her letter to Tony Abbott asking him to allow same-sex couples to marry (letter attached).

In her letter, Lottie, aged 11, wrote, “I hope you think again about your law. What you are doing is discrimination, and I think it is wrong. Every couple, gay, straight, or lesbian, should be treated equally”. Read more

Liberal Party Must Allow Its MPs A Conscience Vote on Marriage Equality

THE Irish poet turned Senator WB Yeats had good advice for those seeking social change – “There is no use quarrelling with icebergs in warm water. These questions will solve themselves,” he said.

In Australia, history shows that many great social changes have occurred due to Labor in being in government – pensions, Medicare, native title, removing discrimination from laws on the basis of sexual orientation.

Media Release: Surf Shire Council To Write To Federal Member Sarah Henderson Declaring Support For Marriage Equality

Marriage equality advocates have welcomed Victorian local council Surf Coast Shire’s successful motion in support of marriage equality overnight.

All nine councillors spoke in favour of marriage equality and the vote passed with five votes in favour and three against.

The three ‘no’ votes were from councillors who, while in favour of the reform, claimed it was not council business. Read more

Media Release: Advocates Welcome Human Rights Commission Investigation Into Alleged Union LGBTI Discrimination

Australian Human Rights Commissioner, Tim Wilson, will investigate allegations of systemic anti-gay discrimination in a major Australian union following a letter of complaint from key LGBTI community advocates.

Australian Marriage Equality National Director, Rodney Croome, PFLAG National Spokesperson, Shelley Argent, and Independent Member for Sydney, Alex Greenwich, wrote to Mr Wilson earlier this week calling for an investigation into the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Union following allegations raised at the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption. Media Release: Advocates Plea For Aust Law To Respect Overseas Same-Sex Marriages

Marriage equality advocates have issued a plea to a Senate inquiry to respect the marriages of Australian couples married overseas.

At a hearing into a Greens’ bill that would recognise overseas same-sex marriages, Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Every politician who says they respect the institution of marriage should show respect for the legal overseas marriages of Australian same-sex couples by voting to recognise these marriages.” Read more

Same-Sex Couples Head Over the Ditch for Vows

Hundreds of Australian same-sex-couples have married in New Zealand since marriage equality laws came into effect a year ago.

In the first 12 months, 926 same-sex couples have tied the knot in New Zealand, according to the New Zealand registry of marriages. Of those, 237 weddings – nearly one in four – involved Australian residents.

Queensland Labor’s Push to Force Federal MPs to Support Marriage Equality

There were cheers of joy, people fist-pumping and placards being waved in the air.

But this wasn’t supporters passionately barracking for a football team. Instead it was a group of Labor activists celebrating a milestone in their campaign for marriage equality in Australia.

The Queensland Labor state conference on Sunday passed a motion calling on federal Labor MPs to be forced to vote in favour of future marriage equality bills.

Flying the PFLAG

A proud Brisbane mother is helping other parents understand, accept and support the gay sons and daughters living in the community.

In 1995, Shelley Argent was an “ordinary, stay-at-home mother” when her son James’ announced: “Mum, Dad… I’m gay.”

Jacqui Tomlins: Ten Years Ago Today…

Ten years ago today one of the very first battles for marriage equality in Australia was fought. It was a small, quiet battle between two same-sex couples and the Howard Government. It started in the Victorian Family Court and ended in federal parliament. And it saw the joyous, hopeful and affirming celebration of two same-sex marriages turn into the Marriage Amendment Act 2004.

‘We can vote but we can’t get married’

Josh Bradley and Luke Ryan have just announced their engagement. However, there is one problem halting their big plans: they can’t get married in Australia.

The Wagga duo say they have about two years before their wedding day and have issued an impassioned plea to the nation’s leaders to follow countries like New Zealand and the United Kingdom to “get on board” with same-sex marriage.
